Three things a visitor needs within a couple of seconds: what you do, who you do it for, and the next step. Everything else can wait for a scroll. The common mistake is filling that space with a large stock photograph and a slogan, which uses the most valuable area on the page to say nothing specific. Beyond being the right thing to do, several of these overlap directly with how search engines parse a page — a correct heading hierarchy and descriptive link text help both a screen reader and a crawler.

It's a defined set of reusable decisions — a colour palette, type scale, spacing increments, and component patterns for buttons, cards, and forms — applied consistently rather than re-invented per page. On a small site the benefit is mostly practical: pages you add later still look like they belong, changes propagate everywhere at once, and the CSS stays small because components are shared instead of duplicated.

Enough to communicate a relationship or state change, and no more. A subtle transition confirming a button was pressed, or content fading in as it enters the viewport, helps orient the visitor. Animation that delays access to content, or that plays on every scroll, becomes an obstacle. We also honour the `prefers-reduced-motion` setting, because for some users motion causes genuine physical discomfort — the site should respect that preference automatically.

Rendering across the browsers and screen sizes your traffic actually uses, keyboard-only navigation through every interactive element, contrast ratios on real text and background pairs, form submission and error states, correct behaviour when JavaScript is slow to load, and Core Web Vitals measured on a throttled mobile connection rather than a fast desktop one. Every page also gets checked for the basics: one H1, a descriptive title, and alt text on every meaningful image.
