WordPress vs Shopify

WordPress + WooCommerce vs Shopify: the true cost of selling online

You're building a site that has to sell online — and you're stuck on whether Shopify's $39–$399/month plus a per-sale cut is worth it, or whether WordPress with WooCommerce would cost less and give you more control. It's the right question to ask before you commit, because switching later means rebuilding the whole store.

Here's why the trade-off exists. Shopify is a rented, fully managed store: you pay every month for as long as you sell, and unless you use Shopify Payments you also pay up to ~2% extra on every order. WooCommerce is software you install on hosting you own — there's a one-time build cost and ~$25/month hosting, but no monthly platform fee and no per-sale cut ever. You still pay normal Stripe or PayPal processing (~2.9% + 30¢), the same as everyone, everywhere.

We build on WordPress + WooCommerce because for a content-first business that wants to own its store, it's cheaper over time and yours to keep. But we'll tell you honestly when Shopify is the better fit — if you need the fastest solo launch of a pure store, or you run a high-SKU dropshipping catalog, Shopify may win. We've built 200+ sites since 2017 that load in 1.8 seconds, and every one is fixed price with a mockup you approve before we build.

The math nobody shows you: renting a store vs owning one

Shopify's pricing looks simple on the pricing page, but two costs hide inside it. First is themonthly platform fee — $39, $105, or $399 depending on plan — which you pay every month for as long as you sell, whether you make one sale or ten thousand. Second is theper-sale cut: on most plans, unless you use Shopify Payments, Shopify takes an extra fee of up to ~2% on every single order, layered on top of your normal card-processing fee.

WooCommerce works differently because you're not renting anything. You pay a one-time build cost, then ~$25/month for hosting you control. There's no platform fee and no per-sale cut — ever. You still pay standard payment processing (~2.9% + 30¢ via Stripe or PayPal), but that's the same fee you'd pay on any platform, including Shopify. Here's what that looks like on a store doing$20,000/month in sales:

On $20,000/month in salesShopify (Advanced)WordPress + WooCommerce
Monthly platform fee$299 (Shopify Advanced)$0
HostingIncluded~$25
Per-sale platform cut (not on Shopify Payments)up to ~$400 on $20k (~2%)$0
Payment processing (Stripe/PayPal, everywhere)~$610 (2.9% + 30¢)~$610 (2.9% + 30¢)
Total monthly cost on $20k in sales≈ $1,309/mo≈ $635/mo

That's roughly $674/month — about $8,000/year — that stays in your business instead of going to a platform, and the gap only widens as your sales grow. On WooCommerce, that saving is real because there's nothing skimmed off the top: the payment processor is the only middleman, exactly as it is for Shopify's own customers.

There's an honest catch, and we won't bury it: WooCommerce needs maintenance, and Shopify handles that for you. We cover updates, security, and backups from $29/month, which still leaves the owned-store option far cheaper at real volume. The point isn't that Shopify is bad — it's that once you're selling meaningfully, renting your store and giving up a cut of every sale is a cost worth questioning.

WordPress + WooCommerce vs Shopify, side by side

Fair and specific. Green marks where owning your store wins; we flag the rows where Shopify genuinely does.

WordPress + WooCommerceShopify
Monthly platform fee✓ $0 (just ~$25/mo hosting)$39–$399/mo, forever
Per-sale cut✓ None — you keep 100%Up to ~2% unless you use Shopify Payments
Payment processing✓ ~2.9% + 30¢ (Stripe/PayPal)~2.9% + 30¢ (same everywhere)
Who owns the store✓ You — code, catalog, customer listYou rent; leaving = rebuild + re-migrate
Content + SEO strength✓ Dominant — blog, service pages, rankingWeaker as a full content/SEO site
Time to launch a pure store solo✓ Slower — needs setupFastest — fully managed
Maintenance✓ Needs updates (we handle from $29/mo)Fully managed, no maintenance
High-SKU / dropshipping catalogs✓ Capable, needs tuningExcellent out of the box
Very high volume + complex fulfillment✓ Scales with good hostingStrong at enterprise scale

Prefer a pure store built solo, fully managed, with a high-SKU catalog? Shopify is a legitimate choice — and we'll say so. Want a WooCommerce storeyou own, built on WordPress for content and SEO? That's what we do.

The honest verdict

There's no universally "right" platform — there's the right one for your business model. Here's how to tell.

Choose Shopify if…

  • You want the fastest possible launch of a pure store, solo, with zero developer help.
  • You need a fully managed platform with no maintenance, updates, or hosting to think about.
  • You run high-SKU or dropshipping catalogs where Shopify's app ecosystem does the heavy lifting.
  • You're at very high volume with complex, multi-warehouse fulfillment and want enterprise tooling.
  • You'd rather pay a predictable monthly fee than own and maintain the software yourself.

Choose WordPress + WooCommerce if…

  • You want to own your store, catalog, customer list, and code — not rent them forever.
  • You want to avoid a $39–$399/mo platform fee and a per-sale cut of up to ~2% on every order.
  • Your business is content-first: blog, service pages, and SEO that has to rank alongside the store.
  • You're doing meaningful volume — at $20k/mo, owned typically runs ~$635 vs ~$1,309 on Shopify.
  • You want a 1.8s-loading site, fixed price, and a design you approve before we build.

Stores that switched off Shopify — and the numbers

Real US businesses that moved from a monthly Shopify fee + per-sale cut to an owned WooCommerce store.

★★★★★

“We were on Shopify paying $299/month plus about 2% on every order — at $18k/month in sales that was over $650/month going to the platform on top of card fees. Antrais Tech rebuilt us on WooCommerce for $1,100 and ~$25/mo hosting. We broke even in under 2 months and now save roughly $650 every single month. Load time dropped from 3.2s to 1.8s too. Painless move.”

Marcus R.Coffee Roaster | Austin, TX
★★★★★

“I run a content-heavy site — recipes, guides, then a small store. On Shopify the blog was an afterthought and I couldn't rank. They moved me to WordPress + WooCommerce for $1,400. Organic traffic is up 210% in 6 months and store revenue followed. Cutting the $79/mo Shopify plan was a bonus. Wish I'd done it two years ago.”

Priya N.Wellness & Supplements | Denver, CO
★★★★★

“I was paying Shopify $399/month on the Advanced plan plus 0.6% per sale doing about $22k/month — close to $530/month just in platform costs. WooCommerce dropped that to $0 platform fee and ~$25 hosting. Build was $1,300, break-even was 6 weeks, and I own my customer list now instead of renting access to it. Migration of 280 products took a week with no downtime.”

Danielle F.Home Goods Store | Portland, OR
★★★★★

“We almost stayed on Shopify out of fear of maintenance. They were honest that WooCommerce needs updates, then quoted maintenance at $29/month to handle it all. So I get the ownership and no per-sale cut, and still never touch the technical side. Total switch cost paid for itself in 7 weeks against our old $299/mo bill.”
