Beyond that: label fields properly rather than relying on placeholder text that vanishes on focus, use appropriate input types so phones show the right keyboard, validate inline rather than only on submit, and make the error message say what to fix. Confirmation should be immediate and explicit.

Headings are the document outline, not a styling mechanism. One H1 describing the page's subject, H2s for its major sections, H3s nested beneath those. Screen reader users navigate by jumping between headings, so a page where levels are skipped or chosen for visual size becomes hard to navigate. Search engines use the same structure to understand what a page covers and which sections answer which query. Font size should be set in CSS, independent of the heading level.

It's a defined set of reusable decisions — a colour palette, type scale, spacing increments, and component patterns for buttons, cards, and forms — applied consistently rather than re-invented per page. On a small site the benefit is mostly practical: pages you add later still look like they belong, changes propagate everywhere at once, and the CSS stays small because components are shared instead of duplicated.

Enough to communicate a relationship or state change, and no more. A subtle transition confirming a button was pressed, or content fading in as it enters the viewport, helps orient the visitor. Animation that delays access to content, or that plays on every scroll, becomes an obstacle. We also honour the `prefers-reduced-motion` setting, because for some users motion causes genuine physical discomfort — the site should respect that preference automatically.
